A HANDCRAFTED BASKET AUCTION TO BENEFIT THE REBUILDING OF FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH (DISCIPLES OF CHRIST) OWENSBORO, KY

  image1.jpg  image2.jpg

In the early morning of March 18, 2013, lightning struck the 103-year-old building of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Owensboro, Kentucky. It was a total loss. As we stood watching fire destroy our church home on the morning of March 18, 2013, oblivious to the wind, rain, and cold, the family of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Owensboro was helpless to do anything, yet powerless to turn away. The loss was overwhelming -- the beauty of the century-old sanctuary with its stained glass where generations had worshiped together, the magnificent pipe organ, the kitchen where so many meals had been loving prepared and shared.

In the face of such destruction, I felt compelled to create something of beauty. The act of weaving was healing for me. And as I created basket after basket, my grief began to transform into hope and purpose.

Our beloved church building, with all its beauty and even more beautiful memories, is gone. Insurance will provide a new, more functional building, but it is not possible to replicate that beauty that took generations to create. And so we look forward.

It is my hope that the proceeds from my baskets will help to create some element of beauty in our new church home that will inspire worship and continued healing.
